About This Route
Beijing to Chengdu connects the capital with southwest China's most vibrant city — home to giant pandas, Sichuan cuisine, and a thriving tea culture. The high-speed route takes about 7.5 hours, crossing mountain ranges that once made this journey a multi-day ordeal.
Which Train Should You Take?
About 15 daily G-trains serve this route. The Xi'an–Chengdu section passes through spectacular mountain tunnels — a feat of engineering. For budget travelers, overnight Z-trains with sleeper berths still run (about 26 hours) but the G-train is vastly superior in comfort and time.
Seat Classes
First class is recommended for this 7.5-hour journey. The mountain sections can be bumpy on older tracks, and the extra seat width helps. Second class is fine if you're used to long train rides — bring entertainment and snacks.

Tips for This Route
Chengdu East station handles most high-speed arrivals — it's well-connected by metro. Book 5–7 days ahead during peak season (summer, National Day). The panda base opens early; if arriving in the evening, plan your panda visit for the next morning.
