About This Route

The Beijing–Shanghai high-speed railway is China's busiest and most iconic rail corridor. Covering 1,318 km in as little as 4 hours 18 minutes, it connects the political capital with the financial hub. Over 50 daily departures mean you can pick a time that suits your schedule — even same-day booking is usually fine outside holidays.

Which Train Should You Take?

G-trains dominate this route, running at 300–350 km/h on dedicated high-speed tracks. They're the fastest and most comfortable option. A handful of D-trains also operate, taking about 30 minutes longer but costing slightly less. There are no overnight Z-trains on this corridor — the journey is too short to justify a sleeper.

Seat Classes

Second class is the sweet spot: 5 seats per row (3+2 layout), power outlets at every seat, and plenty of legroom for the 4–5 hour ride. First class (4 seats per row) adds wider seats and a quieter cabin. Business class offers lie-flat pods but costs 3× more — worth it only if you need to sleep.

Tips for This Route

Beijing South and Shanghai Hongqiao are the main stations — both are well-connected to metro lines. Arrive 30 minutes early for security screening. During Spring Festival and National Day (October 1–7), book at least a week ahead. Bring snacks; the dining car is overpriced.
