About This Route
Shanghai to Nanjing is a 300 km dash along the Yangtze Delta — China's most economically developed region. The fastest trains cover it in just over an hour, making Nanjing's Ming Dynasty history, Purple Mountain, and famous duck cuisine an easy day trip from Shanghai.
Which Train Should You Take?
G-trains take 62–75 minutes, with about 100 daily services. Some are non-stop, others make 1–2 intermediate stops. D-trains take about 2 hours and cost slightly less. For the small price difference, G-trains are the clear winner.
Seat Classes
Second class handles this hour-long journey perfectly. Seats are comfortable, the ride is smooth, and you'll arrive before you know it. First class is unnecessary unless you want guaranteed quiet.

Tips for This Route
Nanjing South station is the high-speed hub — it's large but well-organized with metro connections. If visiting the Confucius Temple area, take metro Line 1 from Nanjing South (20 minutes). Nanjing station (city center) is served by some slower trains.
