Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1

Arrive & Yangling Mausoleum

Yangling Mausoleum
Xian Yangling Mausoleum
Shanshan

Your guide picks you up at Xi'an Xianyang Airport or Xi'an North Station. On the drive downtown, we stop at Yangling Mausoleum — the burial complex of Emperor Jing of the Western Han Dynasty (2,100 years ago). Unlike the Terracotta Warriors' life-sized army, these are miniature figurines: thousands of 60cm-tall soldiers, servants, and animals behind glass walkways. Look for "Shanshan", a kneeling female figurine with a faint smile — locals call her "China's first smile."

The site includes a mixed-reality experience where holographic projections bring the court scenes to life. It's a solid intro to Xi'an's obsession with imperial burial culture before you hit the big one tomorrow.

Check into your hotel by late afternoon. If you have energy, take a taxi to the South Gate moat area — 10 minutes from most downtown hotels. Locals practice tai chi under willow trees, and there's a free 5-minute light show at Moon Bridge around 20:30.

Day 2

Terracotta Warriors, Giant Wild Goose Pagoda & Tang Dynasty Street

Terracotta Army
Big Wild Goose Pagoda
Grand Tang Mall

The main event. Drive 1 hour east to the Terracotta Warriors Museum — get there by 8:30 before the tour bus flood. Three pits to see: Pit 1 is the showstopper (6,000 warriors in battle formation, the scale hits you physically), Pit 3 is the command headquarters (smallest but most intact), Pit 2 has individually excavated warriors you can examine up close — archers, cavalry, generals, each face unique.

Your guide explains how they were made: assembled from parts like a factory line, originally painted in bright reds, greens, and purples (the paint oxidizes within minutes of excavation). Budget 2.5-3 hours here.

Optional: visit the home of the farmer who discovered the warriors in 1974 while digging a well. He sometimes signs books there. Then try a DIY mini terracotta warrior workshop nearby — kitschy but fun, especially with kids.

Afternoon: Giant Wild Goose Pagoda. Built in 652 AD to store Buddhist scriptures brought from India. The pagoda itself is a quick visit (climb 7 floors for city views), but the surrounding area is where you'll spend time. The north square has Asia's largest musical fountain — evening shows are spectacular.

Walk south to Great Tang All Day Mall (大唐不夜城) — a 2km pedestrian street designed to recreate Tang Dynasty aesthetics. It's modern and commercial, but the architecture and evening lighting are genuinely impressive. Street performers in Tang costumes, food stalls, and souvenir shops. Our guide's take: worth 45 minutes of walking through, don't eat here (tourist prices).

Day 3

City Wall, Great Mosque, Muslim Quarter & Departure

Xian City Wall
Muslim Quarter
Great Mosque Xian

Start at the City Wall Remains Museum near Hanguang Gate — most tourists skip this, but it shows the original rammed-earth layers from the Tang Dynasty underneath the Ming-era brick surface. Fascinating if you're into how ancient Chinese cities were built.

Then up onto the City Wall itself. The full loop is 14km — rent a bike and do the south-to-east section (4km, 30 minutes) for the best views. Morning light hits the watchtowers perfectly. You'll see the contrast: modern Xi'an on one side, old rooftops and drum towers on the other.

Walk to the Great Mosque — one of China's oldest (built 742 AD), but designed in Chinese architectural style rather than Middle Eastern. Courtyards, wooden pavilions, calligraphy screens. It's an active mosque, so dress modestly and keep quiet in the prayer hall. The garden courtyard is one of Xi'an's most photogenic spots that most tourists miss.

Finish in the Muslim Quarter. Skip the main Beiyuanmen drag (overpriced, overcrowded) and duck into Dapi Yuan or Sajin Qiao alleys where locals eat. Must-try: yangrou paomo (you tear bread into tiny pieces, they cook it in lamb broth — the tearing is part of the ritual), roujiamo (cumin lamb in flatbread), and fresh pomegranate juice.

Afternoon: guide drives you to Xi'an North Station or Xianyang Airport.
